Health advocacy
Health advocacy or health activism embraces personal service to the individual or family and activities that advance health and admittance to health care in communities and the larger public. Advocates support and promote the patient's rights in the health care arena, help build capacity to improve community health and enhance health policy initiatives focused on available, safe and quality care. Health advocates are best suited to address the challenge of patient-centred care in our complex healthcare system.
Environmental Activism
The environmental movement (sometimes referred to as the ecology movement), including conservation and green politics, is a diverse philosophical, social, and political movement for addressing environmental issues. Environmentalists advocate the sustainable management of resources and stewardship of the environment through changes in public policy and individual behaviour. In its recognition of humanity as a participant in (not enemy of) ecosystems, the movement is centred on ecology, health, and human rights.
Woman rights
We are all entitled to human rights. These include the right to live free from violence and discrimination, enjoy the highest attainable standard of physical and mental health, be educated, own property, vote, and earn an equal wage.
But across the globe, many women and girls still face discrimination based on sex and gender. Gender inequality underpins many problems which disproportionately affect women and girls, such as domestic and sexual violence, lower pay, lack of access to education, and inadequate healthcare.
For many years women’s rights movements have fought hard to address this inequality, campaigning to change laws or taking to the streets to demand their rights are respected. And new activities have flourished in the digital age, such as the #MeToo campaign, highlighting the prevalence of gender-based violence and sexual harassment.
When looking at women’s rights, it’s helpful to have an understanding of feminism. At its core, feminism believes that women are entitled to political, economic, and social equality. Feminism is committed to ensuring women can fully enjoy their rights on an equal footing with men.
Human trafficking
Human trafficking involves the recruitment, transportation, harbouring and/ or exercising control, direction, or influence over a person's movements to exploit that person, typically through sexual exploitation or forced labour. It is often described as a modern form of slavery. Victims suffer physical or emotional abuse and often live and work in horrific conditions. They may also face fatal consequences if they attempt to escape. This crime represents a consistent and pervasive assault on the fundamental human rights of its victims. Traffickers reap enormous profits while robbing victims of their freedom, dignity and human potential at a high cost to the individual and society. Traffickers control their victims in various ways, such as taking away their identity documents and passports, sexual abuse, threats, intimidation, physical violence, and isolation.
